Welcome To Our Town: Creating Safe and Inclusive Communities

Many people feel that Silicon Valley is already a safe and inclusive community. After this event, what do you think? Where is there room for work and improvement, and what successes should be celebrated? How important is public awareness of a community’s commitment to diversity and inclusion?

Highlights from the "Welcome to Our Town" breakout session:

1. Events: Multicultural and Educational
- Presentations to Schools w/probation & gang members.
- Multicultural festivals celebrating different heritages
- Student-run heritage months
- Diversity Forum

2. Improve communication among this group and in the community
- Websites
- Email list
- Automated response mechanisms (e.g. via email)
- Street signs saying “No Hate Zone” and “No Gangs”
- Utilizing the print media- guest columns
- Engage with the new social networking site niot.org (in development)

3. Leverage already-existing resources
- Support the youth in their own efforts
- Expand the hate crime protocol response
